Murrel Breeding Division

Murrel is one of the important indigenous freshwater food fishes having high consumer preference due to its high nutritive value including rich amount of protein, amino acids and fatty acid and pharmacological value. This is one of the highly priced freshwater fishes in the market. However, the culture of this species has not picked up mainly due to non-availability of its seed. FAITT has developed and standardized the induced breeding protocol and seed delivery techniques of murrel. In many places, throughout the country, the demand for this species young ones are, by and large, met from the wild collections; and the farm production is still not common or enough due to inadequate seed supply. Therefore, to meet such a demand and popularise this economically important murrels, FAITT has standardised the captive breeding technology that can be transfer to the farmers.
